Wrongful death case involving an incarcerated man who became critically ill from untreated infection while in state custody and was later transferred to a private hospital for emergency care. Despite his family’s daily presence and clear refusal to consent to withdrawal of life support, the hospital consulted with prison officials rather than the family and removed life support based solely on the prison’s authorization. The patient died less than an hour after extubation. The lawsuit alleged medical malpractice, wrongful death, and federal civil rights violations for unlawful withdrawal of life support, failure to obtain informed consent, and collaboration between correctional officials and the private hospital. The case settled for approximately $1.5 million, including $945,000 against the private hospital and the remaining amount against the prison and its medical contractor.
